Preconception to infancy is the most critical period for influencing a person’s future health. That’s because it’s the time when bodily organs are being formed, but the bodies defence mechanisms are underdeveloped, leaving the body vulnerable to adverse exposures. If there’s ever a time for prospective parents to adopt healthy nutrition, lifestyle and environmental health choices, it’s now!
Preconception care is important if you want to maximise your chances of giving birth to a healthy baby. Eighty to ninety percent of infertility is due to lifestyle factors and therefore considered to be preventable.A sperm and egg take about 80 and 100 days to mature, respectively. Depending on your current health status, it may take weeks to months of preconception preparation to reach optimal health. Therefore, preparation should ideally begin no less than 4 months prior to conception, for both the future mother and father. Evidence suggests that negative health effects from adverse environmental exposures can be trans-generational. This may explain why several studies have shown a 50% reduction in sperm counts over the past 50 years. A consciously planned, healthy preconception provides the best possible start for the whole family.
The first few weeks of pregnancy are the most critical for the developing foetus. Therefore, the health and wellbeing of the mother during this period is really important, as it is for the whole pregnancy. A planned pregnancy will help to reduce the risks associated with potential harmful exposures to the foetus in early pregnancy. Foetal alcohol syndrome due to the mother consuming alcohol immediately following conception is one such risk, but there are many others.
Following birth, the baby is still directly dependant on the mother’s health and wellbeing while being breastfed and nurtured. The baby is growing rapidly during this period and requires good nutrition. Its defence systems are still immature and an environment which minimises harmful environmental exposures is still really important, as it is for all of us. This is not the time to renovate the house! It can be a busy and demanding time for the whole family, but this doesn’t have to translate into a stressful environment. This is where conscious planning and support are important so that you can all enjoy this special time in your lives.
We can’t understate the importance of conscious preconception to infancy care. We highly recommend that prospective parents seek the services of a holistic practitioner to guide them through this process. It may be the best investment you ever make in your child’s life!
