There are many different types of arthritis, but the most common form, osteoarthritis (OA), is the leading cause of pain and disability amongst the elderly. It effects the joints and symptoms include – pain, tenderness, stiffness, loss of flexibility, crepitations (noises) and osteophytes (bone spurs). An ageing population and increasing obesity rates mean that the burden of osteoarthritis is expected to increase exponentially in the future.
Contrary to popular belief, osteoarthritis is a disease and not just an inevitable part of ageing. Unfortunately, once someone has osteoarthritis, there is currently no known cure and treatment is aimed at reducing symptoms. However, up to 70% of osteoarthritis may be preventable by avoiding weight gain and joint injuries alone.
Traditional risk factors include – obesity, joint injury, female gender, bone deformities and older age. However, osteoarthritis has also been linked to several components of metabolic syndrome, such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes. This highlights the need to treat osteoarthritis holistically using nutrition, lifestyle and environmental health interventions.
Conventional pharmaceutical medication treatments for osteoarthritis carry considerable risks of adverse side effects if used long term. Our treatments aim to improve, or at least preserve, joint function while relieving pain and symptoms. Early treatment is important to slow the progression of the disease. Non-drug treatments have been shown to provide substantial benefits in osteoarthritis treatment.
Some nutritional medicine alternatives to drug therapy for improving joint pain and/or function, include:
It’s important that you do not self-prescribe nutritional supplements for arthritis, particularly if you are on medication due to the potential for interactions.
The underlying causes of osteoarthritis also need to be addressed to achieve the best results. This is best carried out using a naturopathic nutritionist approach that details the case history and aims to restore overall health. Read about Our Nutritionist Philosophy here.
